Teenage OrthoPod Scheme

Get an introduction to orthopaedics surgery and treatments through this course designed for students of Secondary 4-5/ Year 11-12/ Grade 10-11. You will participate in hands-on learning and be mentored by clinical staff from the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, School of Clinical Medicine. You will experience clinical activities and medical research via interactive workshops and virtual reality. Assigned mentors are energetic and passionate, and will be delighted to share their experiences. Detailed course components include:
1. Learning to apply plaster casts and to fix fractures using implants and power tools
2. Observing surgical demonstrations via virtual reality
3. Learning about cutting-edge research that is impacting patient care in the field of orthopaedics, such as artificial intelligence and computer navigation
4. Sharing from orthopaedics patients on their struggles and triumphs in living with disability
5. Sharing from medical students and doctors at different career stages to prepare for university life and medical education

Current Secondary 4-5/ Year 11-12/ Grade 10-11 students

Assessment / Pre-requisite(s):
This course is highly competitive. Applicants are required to submit a personal statement of between 350 and 1,000 words. From these submissions, a selected group may be invited for an interview on *18 June 2022 (Sat).


Your statement should address the following:


  • Why you would like to join the Teenage OrthoPod Scheme (TOPS);
  • What distinguishes you from other applicants;
  • What you expect to gain or achieve from TOPS;
  • Any points that show your interest and suitability for TOPS.
