What’s On

Hong Kong InnoHealth Cup

The Hong Kong InnoHealth Cup is organised by:

HKU LKS Faculty of Medicine; and
Hong Kong Subsidized Secondary Schools Council;

and co-organised by: (in alphabetical order)

Association of Principals of Government Secondary Schools;
Grant Schools Council Hong Kong; and
Hong Kong Direct Subsidy Scheme Schools Council.

The goal of this Cup is to inspire secondary school students to cultivate empathy towards real-world health issues, utilise evidence-based research principles effectively, and harness their creative spirit to develop innovative health and biomedical technologies through research projects.

Themed “Health Technology & Innovation”, participating secondary school teams are tasked with 1) identifying and addressing a health problem, 2) proposing an innovative solution and 3) developing an action plan with solution and implementation steps. Their concepts will be evaluated through a poster, a video and a live presentation across three rounds:

Preliminary Round: Poster Submission and Project Showcase Expo
Semi-final: Final Poster with 5-minute Video Presentation
Final: Live Presentation (Top 10 Teams)

Eligibility

Open to all Hong Kong secondary school students, including those from government-funded, aided, Direct Subsidy Scheme (DSS), private, and international schools.
Selected school teams in the Greater Bay Area, by invitation only.
Participants must be in Secondary 4-5 / Grade 10-11 / Year 11-12 during the 2025/26 academic year.
Each team should consist of 3-4 students from the same secondary school, led by a teacher.
Each school may nominate up to two teams. If a school nominates two teams, the first nomination will be given priority for participation.

Application Procedures

Teacher-in-charge must submit applications via the designated online form >>HERE<< on or before 12 noon (HKT) on 5 January, 2026 (Mon). All confirmation and updates, including the Zoom link for the seminar and further instructions will be sent to the registered teacher’s email address.
Teachers will be notified of successful applications and payment details via email by the third week of December, 2025. To confirm a team’s entry, please settle the entry fee by 16 January, 2026 (Fri).
Successful applicants will receive confirmation of participation and the Online Seminar Zoom link on or before 16 January, 2026 (Fri).

Project Theme

“Health Technology & Innovation”

Participants are encouraged to:

Identify a real-world health-related problem and propose innovative solutions; or
Conduct research projects at a manageable scale for school-level exploration; or
Communicate scientific ideas on latest advances in health technology & innovation.

Here are some suggestions for your inspiration:

Topic 1: Explore health data from Hong Kong and develop web-based dashboard

Use open health data from the Hong Kong government (data.gov.hk) to explore trends in diseases over time. Students can investigate how factors like the environment, population age, or lifestyle choices might be related to changes in health patterns. E.g. examining how air pollution affects hospital admissions, how an ageing population impacts certain diseases, etc. Students can develop a web-based dashboard to enable interactive visualisation and exploration of the data.

Topic 2: Develop mobile apps to collect health data

Design mobile apps to harness various in-built sensors of a mobile phone, such as camera, microphone, and movement sensors, to collect health-related data. E.g. monitoring mental fatigue based on eye movements, using augmented reality to guide and analyse posture, etc.

Topic 3: Develop an AI-enabled medicine dispenser for elderly with chronic medication need

Develop a mechanical-electronic device that can sort drug tablets based on shape and colour, and dispense them in accordance to the doctor’s prescription to improve treatment compliance of elderly people.

Topic 4: Design of an adjustable ergonomic chair to support good posture

Develop a prototype of an adjustable ergonomic chair with built-in sensors and adjustable arm-rests to improve posture of the user.

Topic 5: Design of molecular biomarkers for environmental pollutants

Develop and test simple biochemical assays to test the presence of environmental polluants in the household.

Topic 6: Develop an AI chatbot for health and nutritional advice

Develop an AI-powered chatbot that can provide personalised health and nutritional guidance based on user input, and offer reliable, evidence-based information to help individuals make informed daily dietary choices based on health goals and available meal choices.

Topic 7: Other relevant topics related to Health Technology & Innovation

Pre-event: Online Seminar (16 January 2026)

A 1-hour online seminar on “Health Technology & Innovation” along with a brief introduction of the competition and 30-minute Q&A breakout session via Zoom will be conducted at 5 p.m. on 16 January, 2026 (Fri).
A Zoom link will be sent to the registered teachers’ and participants’ email.

Preliminary Round: E-Poster Submission (30 March 2026) and Project Showcase Expo (11 April 2026)

E-Submission of Poster

Teams are required to submit a one-page poster in PDF format (size A0) that highlights (an) innovative concept(s), creative design, and original illustrations, via the submission portal on or before March 30, 2026 (Mon).

All teams must print and bring their own printed poster (size A0) for mounting on the display board at the Project Showcase Expo on 11 April, 2026 (Sat).

Project Showcase Expo

Teams will be invited to set up a display board showcasing their project poster for a 3-hour exhibition on HKUMed Campus on April 11, 2026 (Sat). They will engage with other participants and judges by answering questions.

Semi-final: Attachment Programme and Final Poster with 5-minute Video (25 April - 15 May 2026)

Attachment Programme

Shortlisted teams will be paired with HKU academic staff who will provide consultation sessions to support the teams.
1-2 face-to-face/Zoom supporting sessions for discussions, coaching, and technical support on project implementation will be conducted from April to May, 2026.

E-submission of Final Poster with 5-minute Video

Shortlisted teams are required to submit their Final Poster (in PDF format) with a 5-minute Video Presentation (in MP4/MOV format) via the designated submission portal on or before 22 May, 2026 (Fri).

Final Presentation (27 June 2026)

Final presentation

10 shortlisted teams are invited to HKUMed Campus to deliver a 5-minute presentation, followed by a 5-minute Q&A session on 27 June, 2026 (Sat).
Judges will evaluate based on the same criteria used during the shortlisting process.

Judging Panel and Criteria

The judging panel will comprise academics and professors from HKUMed.

Judges will assess submissions based on how effectively each team’s vision addresses affordability, availability, and acceptability in translating science and technology to enhance health. Evaluation criteria include, but are not limited to:

Clarity and significance of the problem
Scientific and technological methodology
Novelty and vision
Feasibility of the proposed solutions
Insight into testing efficacy
Consideration of affordability and availability
Social acceptability
Creativity and design of the poster
Evidence of effective teamwork

Terms and Conditions

All participating teams must abide by the following rules and regulations:

HKU LKS Faculty of Medicine and the Hong Kong Subsidized Secondary Schools Council (“The Organisers”) reserve all rights in matters relating to the “Hong Kong InnoHealth Cup,” including rules, disputes, and disqualifications. The Organisers may disqualify any participating team that fails to comply with the competition rules.
Teams must adhere to the scheduled timelines and instructions provided by the Organisers. Teachers-in-charge and their respective teams are required to be present in Hong Kong on the dates of the Seminars, Project Showcase Expo, Attachment Programme, Final Competition, and Prize Presentation Ceremony. Team members who do not participate in every round are ineligible for any prize or certificate of participation.
All submissions must be original work created solely by the participating team members for the “Hong Kong InnoHealth Cup.” Proposals and presentations must not infringe upon the intellectual property rights of third parties. Proper citation and acknowledgment of any references are mandatory.
By participating in the “Hong Kong InnoHealth Cup,” all participants agree to allow their submissions to be used by the Organisers for promotional purposes, including, but not limited to, printed and online media. Participants also consent to being photographed or recorded during the event for publicity purposes by the Organisers.
The Organisers reserve the right to modify event dates and formats in response to unforeseen circumstances and will provide timely updates to all participants as necessary.
