Introduction

Teenage OrthoPod Scheme

Get an introduction to the fascinating specialty of orthopaedics surgery in this course designed for Secondary 4-5/ Year 11-12/ Grade 10-11 students. Students will participate in interactive workshops and be mentored by clinical staff from the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, School of Clinical Medicine. Assigned mentors are energetic, passionate, and will be delighted to share their insights and experiences. Subject to relaxation of the Emergency Response Level at the Hospital Authority, students may also shadow orthopaedic surgeons during their daily clinical duties. Detailed course components include:

 

1. Learning to apply plaster casts
2. Saw bone workshop by using implants and power tools
3. Sharing sessions from orthopaedics specialists, medical students, and patients
4. Shadowing orthopaedic surgeons in their daily activities such as ward rounds, outpatient clinic attendance, and operation theatre sessions (subject to Hospital Authority regulations during summer period)

Current Secondary 4-5 / Year 11-12 / Grade 10-11 students

Assessment / Pre-requisite(s):
This course is highly competitive. Applicants are required to submit a personal statement of between 350 and 1,000 words. From these submissions, a selected group may be invited for an interview, details to be announced.
Your statement should address the following:
  • Why you would like to join the Teenage OrthoPod Scheme (TOPS);
  • What distinguishes you from other applicants;
  • What you expect to be enriched by the TOPS experience;
  • Any additional points that demonstrate your interest and suitability for TOPS.
Selection and Result Announcement
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an interview held by the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology by early-June.
If you do not hear from us by 14 June 2024 (Fri), you may assume your application has been unsuccessful this time and will not proceed further.
Application results and payment details will be announced to successful applicants via email by early-July.
