(English) Liberal Studies taken before 2024 can be used to fulfil the University Entrance Requirements from 2024 onwards.  “Level 2” obtained in Liberal Studies before 2024 will be equivalent to “Attained” in Citizenship and Social Development.

(English) M1 / M2 will be recognised as equivalent to a full elective subject and can be included in the calculation of admission scores.

(English) Penalty will be imposed on subjects which were retaken. The score of the latest attempt of the retaken subject (in the recent three years) will be used in score calculation and a 10% penalty will be imposed. For candidates who took HKDSE more than once but without any repeated subjects, the number of sittings in HKDSE will be taken into consideration when assessing the candidate.

Please note that the University views M1/M2 as the same subject and 10% penalty will apply if candidates took M1 and M2 in different years. An example is as follows:

A 10% penalty will be imposed on Mathematics Extended Part – M1 score of 2025 if the subject is one of the best 6 subjects to be used in score calculation for admission in 2025.

(English) Yes. Eligible candidates will be invited to an interview in July, if they put MBBS as a Band A choice only after the release of HKDSE results.

(English) The MBBS interviews will be conducted face-to-face and no online interview will be arranged. Shortlisted candidates are expected to dress formally for the interview. Secondary school candidates may wear their formal school uniform.

(English) All non-school candidates who apply for the MBBS programme will be considered on a case-by-case basis, and will be compared with the overall calibre of the school candidates and the number of school candidates that year. They are required to provide their CV and post-secondary academic transcript (if any), and are strongly advised to include these documents in the SLP section. The entire academic record of the candidates and any other documents which are further requested will be reviewed and considered during the admission process. Achieving the expected score in the first attempt / after repeated attempts does not guarantee interview and/or admission.

(English) Candidates from Hong Kong-based schools must have completed a six-year secondary education before entering HKU, according to government regulations.

(English) Each local candidate can only submit one application for admission to HKU through either JUPAS or Non-JUPAS in an admissions exercise.

(English) Candidates applying to study MBBS must be able to communicate in Cantonese. Despite that, they are not required to take any AL Chinese language subject or provide supporting documents to demonstrate their Cantonese ability.

(English) Usually, candidates will do half of the units in the first year and then complete the remaining units in the second year of the two-year IAL course.  They are expected to cash-in the units for AL grades for all subjects in the same exam series at the end of the second year.  It is acceptable to cash-in the units for Mathematics in the first year and the units for the remaining subjects in the same exam series at the end of the second year, e.g.:

(English) Candidates are expected to be enrolled in full-time study when completing the two-year GCEAL / IAL course.  Candidates spending less time studying than their counterparts who complete the full two-year GCEAL / IAL course will be considered for admission on a case-by-case basis.

(English) Current HKU non-final year undergraduate students may apply for an internal transfer if they are interested in MBBS. There is no fixed quota for internal transfer students each year but it is highly unlikely that the MBBS programme will accept internal transfer students.

(English) Candidates who are currently studying medicine abroad in a high-ranked university will be considered on an individual basis. Successful candidates will normally be required to start the MBBS programme from Year 1. Advanced Standing may be granted, subject to the provision of the university transcript, course outlines and the coverage of the course topics and content at the overseas university.

(English) If your overseas medicine programme allows an exit Bachelor’s degree award option, please apply for the MBBS during the final year of such exit Bachelor’s programme.

All of the supporting documents, including the academic results in the medical school, will be reviewed. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to attend an interview and an additional qualifying test.

(English) MBBS (Distinguished MedScholar) targets high achievers who aspire to study Medicine at HKU, either via JUPAS or the non-JUPAS admission route.

You may wish to note that MBBS (Distinguished MedScholar) shares the same JUPAS code (JS 6456) and non-JUPAS programme code (6456) as the existing MBBS programme.

(English) For JUPAS applicants, you may apply to MBBS (Distinguished MedScholar) by placing JS6456 as one of your Band A choices. You will be assessed for admission to either MBBS or MBBS (Distinguished MedScholar) in one single JUPAS code, depending on your final HKDSE results.

For non-JUPAS applicants, you may select programme code 6456 as your “1^st choice programme”. You will be assessed for admission to either MBBS or MBBS (Distinguished MedScholar) in one single programme code, depending on your academic merit and achievements.

As mentioned above, candidates can apply to MBBS (Distinguished MedScholar) in one single code (via JUPAS or non-JUPAS route) and thus no additional application information is required. The same applies to JUPAS sub-schemes applicants as well.

(English) Candidates must satisfy the stipulated MBBS entrance requirements, i.e. outstanding academic achievement plus admission interview results, and have achieved a programme entry score as stipulated in the table below. Entry score is for candidates’ reference only. Satisfying minimum score does not guarantee admission, as candidates’ whole profile will also be considered. Please note that Chemistry is a compulsory subject for admission to the MBBS programme. Public examination results of Chemistry taken at the high school level, e.g. HKDSE, HKALE, GCEAL / IAL, IB, and SAT / AP, are required.

^{^} The Best 6 score is calculated by using the HKU bonus scoring system.

^#Chinese and English Language subjects, Critical Thinking, General Studies, Global Perspectives and Research, Knowledge and Enquiry, Project Work, Thinking Skills, and Extended Project Qualification are excluded.

^$Where the same subject is attempted at two different examination boards, or the same subject is re-attempted at the same examination board, or the same subject is attempted in two different examination systems (designed for university admission), the result obtained in the earlier of the two will be counted as first attempt result.

(English) No. There will not be a separate admission interview for MBBS (Distinguished MedScholar).

Newly admitted students in MBBS (Distinguished MedScholar) will be invited to select their elite mentor and attend a planning session in August.

(English) Students admitted to MBBS (Distinguished MedScholar) can complete MBBS and a Master of Research in Medicine (MRes[Med]) in six years. Upon completion of MBBS and MRes[Med] and the one-year internship, students will receive financial support from the Faculty to pursue a PhD at a renowned university and potentially join the Faculty as clinical academics upon completion of PhD.

(English) Yes. Students in MBBS (Distinguished MedScholar) can choose to follow the regular 6-year track and undertake Intercalation, Research Attachments and/or Service or Humanitarian Work in their third year of Enrichment Year, instead of MRes[Med].

It is important to note that, MBBS (Distinguished MedScholar) students who are interested in pursuing a PhD after their MBBS studies are strongly encouraged to study in MRes[Med] for Enrichment Year, as scholarships will be offered by HKUMed for pursuing a PhD at a renowned university overseas upon graduation with the possibility of joining HKUMed as clinical academics at the level of Clinical Assistant Professor.

(English) Yes. Students who have met/satisfied the entry requirements for MBBS (Distinguished MedScholar) can choose to opt out of the study track depending on personal choice. However, students must do so within the timeframe as stipulated by the Faculty.

Students who do not meet the entry requirements for MBBS (Distinguished MedScholar) at the time of admission have the opportunity to opt in to the MBBS (Distinguished MedScholar) track if they have achieved outstanding results in their First Summative Assessment at the end of Year 1 (e.g. in the top 5%).

(English) Students who are admitted to MBBS (Distinguished MedScholar) are guaranteed the following provisions:

• guaranteed hall places throughout the undergraduate studies;
• financial support for further PhD studies at a renowned university overseas;
• guaranteed an elite mentor of their own choice within the Faculty or the University.

(English) The research project in MRes[Med] will be conducted in Hong Kong. On the other hand, both local and international options are offered in Intercalation, Research Attachments and Service or Humanitarian Work of the Enrichment Year.

(English) Yes. Students who are admitted to MBBS (Distinguished MedScholar) have the option to choose their own mentors from any disciplines within the Faculty or the University.

It is important to note that, all students in the existing MBBS programme will be assigned mentors by the Faculty; these mentors will assist students and provide academic guidance throughout their different stages of studies.

(English) The academic curriculum of MBBS and MBBS (Distinguished MedScholar) are identical. Students will receive robust and well-structured medical education and training at HKUMed to achieve an eye-opening and fulfilling learning experience.

With the launch of this study track, MBBS (Distinguished MedScholar) students are given an exclusive option to undertake a substantial medical research and pursue a faculty-supported academic pathway by studying MBBS and MRes[Med] in 6 years.

HKUMed has a long history of nurturing the next generation of healthcare and medical professionals and leaders. Students who study for MBBS or MBBS (Distinguished MedScholar) enjoy the advantage of a wide network of medical alumni who excel in their respective medical discipline and profession, locally and internationally.

(English) Students who have achieved Level 5 or above in English Language in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination, or equivalent, are exempted from the 6 credits of Core University English course requirement.

Students with GCEAL/IAL or IB Diploma qualifications will be granted advanced standing if they have completed at least seven years of secondary education at the time of admission.

Candidates with other qualifications will be considered for advanced standing on a case-by-case basis but will normally be required to study the programme from Year 1.
