We are constantly reviewing the curriculum to ensure that it keeps pace with the scientific developments and changing needs of modern healthcare. Message from the Dean
Greetings to prospective students of HKUMed.
HKUMed has a long-standing history of nurturing future healthcare professionals both locally and internationally. Over the past year, we have introduced new initiatives while implementing ongoing endeavours that all aim to make our Faculty faster, higher and stronger than ever. Hopefully, our dynamic expansion will convey a sense of inclusiveness and togetherness within the campus so that we can lift all corners of the Faculty to higher levels of excellence.
Campus Development & Infrastructure
Currently, we are upgrading our existing facilities to incorporate new teaching technologies. For instance, telepresence technologies have been installed in several premises, allowing virtual connections between teaching venues for greater interconnectivity in areas of teaching, distance training, and interactive learning. Meanwhile, the William MW Mong Block on Sassoon Road is undergoing renovation to provide extra telepresence teaching venues together with a clinical training centre equipped with advanced simulation, VR, and AR technologies.
Looking towards the future, several long-term projects intended to accommodate our growth are in the pipeline. The long-awaited Clinical Training and Amenities Centre will be built with a combination of training and residential spaces to support medical students during their clinical years. Within walking distance, there will be a new academic superstructure located on the other side of 3 Sassoon Road, which willprovide more space for research and teaching. These exciting developments ensure that we will have ample space to grow and achieve our desired heights.
Teaching & Learning
At HKUMed, not only do students receive an excellent professional education, but they are also armed with essential skills to keep self-learning beyond graduation. On a community level, our team at HKUMed work together harmoniously to support our students’ pursuits, and we are confident that they will benefit from the breadth and depth of our specialist skills available.
A wide range of healthcare-related and professional programmes are offered, including MBBS, BNurs, BChinMed, BPharm, BBiomedSc and BASc(GHD) programmes. These programmes train and produce skilled, confident, and caring individuals, who will serve our society and beyond in a variety of positions.
Recently, we have formalized the Students in Medical and Health Sciences Education (SIMHSE) initiative, so as to systematically engage MBBS students in teaching and curriculum development. This initiative, embracing peer and near-peer teaching, works well in preparing today’s students to become tomorrow’s teachers. As the positive effects of peer teaching are conveyed through word-of-mouth, other programmes follow suit. A pilot peer tutoring programme under the School of Nursing has been formulated this year.
The broad appeal of student involvement led us to expand the initiative to embrace all disciplines within the Faculty. It goes without saying that its success is raising the bar of student involvement in learning across all programmes.
Partnerships & Opportunities
Partnerships with external stakeholders are vital to providing us with research collaborations and opportunities such as Enrichment Year placements. We also strive to deepen our engagement with our alumni, the community, and our partners internationally as well as in Mainland China.
Through our partnership efforts, we have achieved several significant outcomes. Starting in the academic year 2025-26, new intercalation opportunities will be launched for MBBS Enrichment Year students in collaboration with the University of Nottingham. What’s more, we have created a PhD articulation pathway with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, which will be available to selected students starting from this year’s graduating cohort.
Internships play a crucial role in several of our programmes. The BBiomedSc programme has expanded choices for summer industry internships, and the BASc in Global Health and Development has also expanded its line-up of national and international agencies to host the internships. Moreover, the BChinMed programme has resumed summer exchanges in the Mainland and overseas, and the BPharm programme is expanding teaching and learning activities in the Mainland. We anticipate that many more engaging activities will be coming soon.
We firmly believe in the power of collaboration to advance knowledge and enrich the educational experience. In conclusion, as we embrace the fast pace of technological advancements, our students will have the opportunity to learn and master upcoming scientific innovations, quite possibly at various stages of development. Furthermore, I am confident in affirming that HKUMed is the ideal place for you to gain the best undergraduate experience, given our ceaseless efforts to upgrade and introduce new teaching facilities and technologies in a people-first environment, coupled with our commitment to academic rigour and adherence to high standards in our programmes.
Come and join us at HKUMed, where you can embark on an extraordinary journey of learning, growth, and success. We look forward to welcoming you to our vibrant and dynamic community.
